Case Study

I-49 Bates County

  • construction

Capital Paving & Construction was awarded the bridge rehabilitation of 2 sets of twin bridges on I-49 over Marais Des Cygnes River and the Bates County drainage ditch in February of 2020.  This project involved redecking an 800’ bridge, a latex modified concrete overlay on 3 bridges and rehabilitation work including fatigue crack repair, modifying diaphragm connections, expansion replacement and fabricated structural steel.

Challenges

Environmentally sensitive species were present in the steam and surrounding areas. Capital developed plans and procedures to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local laws, including keeping material out of the creek and controlling migratory birds.

Our Approach

Capital submitted a Value Engineering proposal to use a locally available product of equal or better quality for substrate. This proposal was accepted and saved the contract over $13,000. Capital has successfully completed 15 bridges on I-49 and is very aware of the need to keep traffic flowing smoothly and safely. Crossovers were used to handle traffic for this project and Capital helped identify the need for additional advanced warning to increase safety for the traveling public and our workforce. Additionally, Capital developed a Quality Management Plan on this project that involved QC testing and reporting, ensuring all material met or exceeded project specification and daily reporting of work completed, safety and traffic control inspections.
