This project consisted of reconstruction Runway 4/22 at the the Rolla National Airport in Vichy, Missouri. Construction began with pulverization of the existing asphalt and subgrade. The subgrade was then cut to final elevation followed by an 8" cement treatment. Once the subgrade achieved the final design strength, it was prime coated and overlayed with 4" of P-401 Asphalt Pavement, placed in two lifts. Once paving operations were complete, the runway markings were applied, existing runway lights were adjusted to the appropriate heights, and the shoulders were graded to match the final asphalt elevation.
Innovative Approach
This project was the first of its kind in Missouri. The existing runway was subjected to a full-depth reclamation process, which involved pulverizing the asphalt surface to a depth of 12 inches. This was followed by trimming the material to the final subgrade elevation and applying an 8-inch cement treatment. The result was a strong and stable subgrade. By using this method, we minimized the amount of material removed from the site and reduced the amount of new asphalt needed to meet the FAA's design requirements.
