This project is a design-build project consisting of 31 bridge rehabs/replacements on rural routes in 7
counties of MoDOT’s northwest district. The majority of these bridges are on low-volume
roads with less than 400 vehicles per day, though some carry a much higher traffic load.
These bridges connect and serve the communities and citizens of rural northern Missouri. On
average, these bridges have been in place for 71 years, with one bridge in Sullivan County
reaching the 100-year mark in 2022.
Innovative Approaches
Of the 31 locations, 5 bridges were single span with concrete NU girders, 2 were replaced
with concrete box culverts, 9 were superstructure replacements with wide flange steel
girders, and 15 were multi-span with wide flange steel girders. The multi-span bridge
structures were all designed using the innovative accelerated bridge construction (ABC)
process called the simple for dead load, continuous for live load (SDCL) method that we first
introduced successfully on the FARM Bridge Bundle.
The SDCL method has allowed CPC to maximize the number of locations across Northern
Missouri with high quality full-depth concrete decks on galvanized or weathering steel
girders. SDCL allowed for the use of short and shallow steel girders which have kept material
costs low by encouraging more competition from suppliers. The use of these smaller girders
made material more readily available and also enabled us to maximize the number of
superstructure replacements while allowing us to match exiting roadway elevations and
eliminate the need for additional roadway costs which has allowed CPC to provide MoDOT 62
bridge replacements over the last 3 years on NW and FARM which is 5 more locations than
our closest competitor, bringing MoDOT maximum value for its budget.
